Twinfographics: Color and Language

There’s something kind of lovely about clean cutlery.

Maybe it’s the anticipation of a meal yet to be eaten, or perhaps the enjoyment of a meal just eaten, as the forks have been cleaned already. Or maybe it’s just that they’re shiny.

That certain je ne sais quois about clean cutlery was brought to mind by this great infographic – really, just a great illustration – of 11 untranslatable words from other cultures. I love these types of words – those that express an entire feeling or concept in a simple word. Such as komorebi, a Japanese word that refers to the sunlight that filters through the leaves of trees.

The images were first posted on the Maptia blog, but the company then uploaded them as a single image to Visually:

Our second infographic today is about something nearly as intangible as language: color and its myriad meanings.

For example, the feeling evoked by the colors red and blue in the United States are that of patriotism. But in South Africa, red evokes feelings of mourning and in Italy blue makes people think of religion. Lots of interesting thoughts about the psychology of color in this infographic from Amara:
